The party is over when the story ends.

I'm always a little sad when I finish a novel because all those wonderful characters are some of my closest friends. They come and go in my head like a backdoor neighbor, like close family. They bring me new ideas about where they want to go in their story. They show me how to write their story. And then, when we get to the end together, they leave. I'm not sure where they go, except that when I read their stories, they are always there waiting for me and you.
